Dementia Care Solutions
Hi, I'm Amy. I can help you navigate the changing dynamics, emotions, behavior, and physical function you are seeing. Here you will find 1-1 consultations to help you with very specific challenges you may have. You can also choose from individual topics that can help you better understand and cope with the changes you are seeing.
Physical Changes
Dementia affects more than memory. It can also bring noticeable physical changes over time. Individuals may experience changes in balance, coordination, mobility, posture, sleep patterns, and the ability to perform everyday tasks. As the condition progresses, walking, eating, and personal care may become increasingly challenging. Understanding these physical changes can help caregivers anticipate needs, adapt care strategies, and provide support that promotes comfort, safety, and dignity throughout the dementia journey.
Emotional Changes
Dementia can cause a wide range of emotional changes, including anxiety, frustration, sadness, fear, confusion, and mood swings. As individuals struggle to make sense of their changing abilities and surroundings, emotions may become more intense or difficult to express. Understanding these emotional changes helps caregivers respond with empathy, patience, and reassurance, creating more supportive and meaningful connections.
Behavior Changes
Behavior changes are common in dementia and may include agitation, restlessness, withdrawal, repetition, wandering, or resistance to care. These behaviors are often a form of communication and can be triggered by unmet needs, confusion, discomfort, or environmental stressors. Learning to recognize the causes behind these changes helps caregivers respond effectively, reduce distress, and provide compassionate, person-centered support.
My Approach
Hi, I'm Amy.
I am a mom, a friend, a co-worker, and in my career, I am a Licensed Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant. I have more than 9 years of experience in healthcare, specifically in addressing challenges related to memory care.
I have always taken a unique person-centered approach to each challenge because individual people are very different. Your family member or friend could present much differently than your neighbor's. Being diagnosed with Dementia does not look the same way for each individual, and there is no rule book to follow.
There are commonalities that I don't ignore, but solutions must be individual to each person. People come from all walks of life, all cognitive abilities, and varying levels of support and family involvement.
Caring for someone with Dementia can be challenging and exhausting on a good day and overwhelming and devastating on a bad day, but it can also be very rewarding! Some of my best advice and memories have come from working with people challenged by memory loss. I hope to help you with your individual challenge and help you better understand and cope with all the changes you are seeing.
